Activision’s Battleship announced
January 11th, 2012 Posted in 360, News, PS3 Posted By: ValayActivision will be bringing a new take on the Battleship IP to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in May. Let’s just say that this new project isn’t your father’s Battleship.
It’s not a movie-based title, it’s not a board game, and it has no multiplayer.
So, how does the game play out? Read on below for the first details, courtesy of the February issue of Game Informer.
- Based on the film’s license
- Developed by Double Helix
- Takes the movie’s premise and uses it as a back-drop for an unconventional FPS that’s otherwise unrelated to the script
- Game demo begins with a short sequence showing Cole Mathis storming the sands of Ni’ihau island from a landing craft
- Then moves to a first-person view
- Looks like a military shooter
- Mathis ducks behind cover, taking potshots, chucking grenades at the alien interlopers
- Switch to a command mode at any time
- This gives player a birds-eye-view of the action
- In-game display is based on a grid
- Grid features intersecting numbers and letters
- Can command Navy ships around to provide support from sea, attack alien vehicles, help with other objectives
- Obtain random tokens that alien foot soldiers drop
- Use coins for power-ups in command mode
- Coin examples: Repair a damaged vessel, bring in an artillery strike, take on direct control of a Naval destroyer for 20 seconds
- Naval destroyer does double damage
- Maintain a balance between both modes of gameplay
- Aliens engage Mathis on the sands and hammer away at the human fleet
- Sounds of sinking ships can be heard if you ignore their dwindling health meters too long
- Important to stay on top of capture points at sea to earn support bonuses
