David Cage: PS3 still “very powerful”, people will be surprised at what it can do with Beyond
October 14th, 2012 Posted in News, PS3 Posted By: ValayBeyond: Two Souls is coming out during an interesting point of the current console generation. The PlayStation 3′s successor is widely expected to be revealed at next year’s E3, with a launch coming as soon as Holiday 2013.
So it’s interesting to see Quantic Dream investing in what could be called a new IP at this point. Most gaming enthusiasts are looking forward to the next big thing and getting a glimpse at the next piece of technology.
But for Quantic Dream founder David Cage, technology isn’t too important, and he’s actually more than happy to be making a new title at the end of this console cycle. Ultimately, Cage feels that technology is useless without a vision and idea. It’s also important to keep in mind that the PlayStation 3 has a pretty large install base – especially compared to a new home system.
Going back to the point about technology, Cage also believes that the “PlayStation 3 is still a very powerful console”. He reckons that ”with Beyond, people will be surprised at what the console can do.”
Below is Cage’s full response when asked by Game Informer in its November 2012 issue about making Beyond at the end of a console lifecycle:
“Actually, I am not that interested in technology. I like what it allows me to do on the creative side, but any technology, no matter how good it is, is only a tool. It is the pen to write the book, but not the book. If you have no vision and no idea, the best technology won’t make your game any better, just as the best pen won’t make a great book. But if you have something to say, it gives you the means to say it better.
“Regarding Beyond, I feel fortunate to be making a game at the end of this console cycle. This is the moment where we will have the largest installed base. PlayStation 3 is still a very powerful console, and we discovered on Beyond that we could do much more with it than we initially thought. I think that with Beyond, people will be surprised at what the console can do.”
