David Cage: PS3 still “very powerful”, people will be surprised at what it can do with Beyond

Beyond: Two Souls is coming out during an interesting point of the current console generation. The PlayStation 3′s successor is widely expected to be revealed at next year’s E3, with a launch coming as soon as Holiday 2013.

So it’s interesting to see Quantic Dream investing in what could be called a new IP at this point. Most gaming enthusiasts are looking forward to the next big thing and getting a glimpse at the next piece of technology.

But for Quantic Dream founder David Cage, technology isn’t too important, and he’s actually more than happy to be making a new title at the end of this console cycle. Ultimately, Cage feels that technology is useless without a vision and idea. It’s also important to keep in mind that the PlayStation 3 has a pretty large install base – especially compared to a new home system.

Going back to the point about technology, Cage also believes that the “PlayStation 3 is still a very powerful console”. He reckons that ”with Beyond, people will be surprised at what the console can do.”

Below is Cage’s full response when asked by Game Informer in its November 2012 issue about making Beyond at the end of a console lifecycle:

“Actually, I am not that interested in technology. I like what it allows me to do on the creative side, but any technology, no matter how good it is, is only a tool. It is the pen to write the book, but not the book. If you have no vision and no idea, the best technology won’t make your game any better, just as the best pen won’t make a great book. But if you have something to say, it gives you the means to say it better.

“Regarding Beyond, I feel fortunate to be making a game at the end of this console cycle. This is the moment where we will have the largest installed base. PlayStation 3 is still a very powerful console, and we discovered on Beyond that we could do much more with it than we initially thought. I think that with Beyond, people will be surprised at what the console can do.”

Power doesnt matter if the game will turn out just as generic and crappy as heavy rain

  • Andrew

Agreed Tanto. Heavy Rain is ridiculously restricting, very linear level design, slow pace (meaning more time to render), QTE driven and the gameplay sucked.
I’m not impressed at the technology, there clearly ARE limits, otherwise they wouldn’t have to funnel us into corridors to compromise.

The best PS3 exclusives are incredibly linear and that’s because of the split RAM decision, the PS3 can’t even run Skyrim due to it not being able to handle that many operations efficiently.

  • Andrew

    best looking*

  • Karl

Everyone are entitled to their own opinions. I love heavy rain. Can’t wait for this game!

  • otherZinc

    @tanto,

I completely agree. This is going to be a point & click movie game just like that garbage Heavy Rain.

PS3 will show me new power if The Last Of Us has campaign co-op. That split RAM will limit all growth of the PS3. Except making movie games.

  • Jonathan

    @tanto

Agreed. Heavy Rain was just another Sony overhype game that didn’t truly deliver, except in graphics.
From what we have seen of the gameplay of Beyond it’s the same shit all over again.

GFY David Cage! Go suck on Kaz’s balls and overhype that some more. The Ps3 is a PoS!

  • moji

@Andrew, dude come on! ur saying best ps3 games are linear, are u expecting every one to make an open world games, red dead redemption is an open-world didnt have as much problem as Skyrim, just cause 2 is open world game with amazing visual and it doesn’t have any problem on ps3, yes these are all Multi-platform games. There is reason why Sony didn’t make open world game, is because its dame expensive, to make a AAA openworld game, sony should at least spend $80 million, sony doesn’t want to take that sort of risk at their current financial position , if it one sell 5m copy sony will still be in a big loss. plz keep in mind xbox360 doesnt have an exclusive AAA open world game, all the xbox game are linear and non of them can be compare to the ps3 exclusive !!!

  • Conzul

Gameplay will be linear, but non-restrictive as it was in Heavy Rain. Anyone who has checked out the closed-door demos of Beyond on Youtube would know this.

IMO while Heavy Rain wasn’t the great game it is touted as, it certainly is very inspiring for the future of the hybridized interactive experience.

  • ObsessedGeorge

Heavy Rain was an amazing achievemend for the gaming industry. This one will make AAA movies look like B-Movies. I can’t wait for it!

  • Certified Ninja

Wait, Heavy Rain is a game? I thought it was an interactive movie all this time.

  • Zach

Holy crap, generally I see mainly Sony fanboys, but this one is full of Microsoft fanboys. To anyone complaining about Sony exclusives being “linear” take a long, hard look at your two exclusives before you say anything about Sony being a linear publishing and developing company Forza: Horizon is your only open world game so, please, for your own dignity, stfu about exclusives. There’s a reason Quantic Dream has chosen PS3 over Xbox 360, its because they prefer the techonology. Clearly, Heavy Rain was a great game, because the reviews were fantastic, PS3 Owners really enjoyed it, and their making another game similar to it. Before you say “Point and Click adventures are gay durrrr” Go play Walking Dead, then you have my permission to stfu. Heavy Rain is a UNIQUE experience, its like its not even a video game. RAM limitation are nothing, Pete Hines, the spokesperson for Bethesda, said DLC not coming to Skyrim or any restrictions on Skyrim PS3 was NOT Sony’s fault. Jeez, everyone. Get your facts straight before you go durr’ing on articles.

There si going to be always “freaking” lazy bastards complaining about something, if you don´t want a game like this don´t buy it and that´s it!!!!!!!
All of you are spoiled little bratts afraid of being outpowered by PS3, I agree with Cage it does´t matter the power you have if you don´t use it properly.
Ask Bethesda and Platinum games how that is, and STFU, the next COD it´s around the corner.

By the way I can´t wait either to try Beyond.

  • Omegas

Ya ya, trying to keep the PS3 alive to squeeze maximum profit.

They need to as the next system will be announced next year E3 and probably released the following year. That’s 2014, we’re going to have the PS3 super hyper slim by that time.

The system has ran it’s course, no need to pretend they can make godly looking games with the system. The longer we extended the current gen the longer the whole gaming cicrle will take before all their tools get upgraded.

Anyways, i’ve grown tired of this gen and the whole thing were the games look almost the same. Even the creativity of what the games look and play like are looking like the same shit.

Going to need some fresh new gameplay and ideas. If we keep it up every type of game will turn into a FPS =/

  • Black Adam

Why don’t any of them run at 1080o or 60FPS? That alone is proof that the GPU is maxed out and can’t render fast enough. Reducing something else isn’t magically using more hidden power.

  • kupomogli

A lot of people hating on Heavy Rain in here. Most of them probably haven’t played it, which is usually where hating any hyped up game comes from.

Heavy Rain is a great game. If you’re a fan of Indigo Prophecy then you’re probably a fan of Heavy Rain. These types of games are this generations adventure style games, similar to games like Monkey Island, King’s Quest, Snatcher, etc. It doesn’t have as much exploration like these other titles since it’s heavily story based with slight alterations depending on what you happen to do, if you mess up on certain quicktime events, etc.

Also, Heavy Rain, for those who are looking for story, has one of the best, if not the best, stories in video games. The progression and storyline in this game put most movies to shame, especially movies pushed out in the last 10 years.

If you think Beyond Two Souls is going to be any different then you’re mistaken. It’s going to be just like Indigo Prophecy and Heavy Rain. Quantic Dreams already has their dedicated fanbase, so those who like those games will purchase their newest ones. New fans who enjoyed Heavy Rain will also more than likely purchase Beyond Two Souls.

GTFO of the games industry Sony. Everyone with a sane mind will NOT fall for your overhype bullshit anymore!

  • steeev

    Lord,
All these Xbox fanboys complaining about a game they didn’t even play.
The ps3 has been a great console, with different titles, many exclusive, to please everyone. Look at your Xbox, Microsoft keep serving you COD games, no new IPs, and rely only on buying exclusive or timed exclusive content, with their billions. Take forza,Alan wake, fable, halo and gears, and that’s all. THAT’S ALL.
All that matters to Microsoft is giving to the 60-70% owners , I mean, the 10-15 yo kids who got an Xbox from dad, a new call of duty every year, with some new maps during the year, to keep these kids busy.
These 60-70% of owners wouldn’t know what to do with so many great and different games the ps3 has.
All they know is criticizing the ps3, hating it, hating Sony, just like the USA media have been doing, all these years.hate hate and more hate. Never a multi platform game will or have scored better on the ps3,even if its the best version. For example, portal 2, which included steam,on the ps3, version that had much much more better graphics than the Xbox version, ign tested the game and gave a 9 to all the versions, ps3,Xbox and pc. Why they didn’t review the game separately, like they do to all the games? Because ps3 version would have got a 10, instead of a 9, because the inclusion of steam, and much better graphics on the ps3 version. But once again, US media shows they don’t want a ps3 game to score better than the Xbox version.all these are facts, check ign. Ign again, they gave a 4 to zack zero, an excellent psn platform game, and at the end, their final words : avoid it.
When mass effect 2 was released for the ps3, it had better lights and graphics than the Xbox version, because it was using the engine used for mass effect 3, and it included all the extensions.so, a better version scores better, right? Wrong.all the big US websites gave a less good score to the ps3 version, like a 9.4, when the Xbox got a 9.5. You see the picture? US media, and all the websites have been cultivating and spreading so much hate towards Sony and their products, while praising the Xbox brand and console, console that was faulty and had huge hardware issues, and kept dying on people’s hands, 2,3,4 times , thanks to the famous rrod. Never did the US media say ‘don’t buy the Xbox,it will stop working sooner or later, due to a hardware default’. Nothing. Nothing.all that mattered was giving shitty scores to the exclusive ps3 games, criticizing Sony brand, and praising Xbox. Even before the vita was released, hundreds of US websites were already talking about doom and gloom, asking US people to not buy one! All this hate seen from outside the US is just incredibly shocking.
But it doesn’t matter now.even with all the hate, Xbox owners(the adults, not the cod kids) realize the ps3 is a great system, with great games.I could give some examples, but I would easily reach 50 titles, no time and space for that, here.
Even with all this hate, ps3 sold really well, and will keep selling, even when the ps4 and the next Xbox will be here.
Just imagine a ps3, for 99$, with a huge catalogue, ranging from god of war to uncharted games, for example.even the US guy will pick one, and will be amazed by the quantity and quality of the games. Thousands of hours playing great games. Even all the actual kids, who only play cod with their friendzzzz, will be adult, and will finally realize what they missed, and will regreat the 50 000 hours they put on cod games. And they will also say ‘ how could I be that stupid, paying 60$ a year, to Microsoft, just to be able to play online, when this simple feature should have been free.don’t tell me the cross game chat , for saying f@ck every 2 seconds is worth 60$…

One thing is sure, Microsoft will milk people again, by releasing a new console barely more powerful than the actual 360, while Sony will release a console 10x more powerful than the ps3, with 4k support, bluray dl,etc. Another futur proof product, with great new games, and during that time, Microsoft will still be buying exclusive dlcs, or even buying call of duty games, so the next generation of kids will ,once again, ask dad a x720, so they can play halo 6 and cod 9, with their little friendzzzz.

Will the US media once again try to kill Sony, will once again, big websites like ign, gamespot, etc, give shitty scores to great ps4 games, while giving 10 to any x720 games, so people choose Microsoft over Sony? Will that hate continue, even stronger, against Sony? Seen from outside the US, the answer can only be ‘YES’.

Will the moderators approve my comment? I bet a ps3 they won’t :)

  • @steeev

GFY PoS N4Gtard! $ony is going down and people will laugh hard at the money you threw away at a dying company.

  • toli

I loved Heavy Rain and i usually dont like point and click adventures..
im looking forward to Beyond :)

  • steeev

    Hey @steeev,
Your react exactly like a spoiled 14 yo little boy, with your comment.
Most hardware you use, Sony invented it.
While Microsoft rely on your daddy to pay 60 bucks for a gold subscription + 60 for cod every year, Sony is developing TOMORROW technologies. Think about 3d, think about 4k, think about bluray. In 6 years, when you grow up, and have a job, you will be happy to buy your 3d 120Gb bluray movie, and watch it on your 80″ 3d tv, at 4k resolution. And then, you’ll be glad to learn you can have those pleasures ,thanks to Sony.

Ok kid, now, go play your cod game, your friendzzz are onlinezzz
