Japanese newspaper claims PS4 will cost over 40,000 yen, releasing this year

Update: Bumped to the top of the front page. Nikkei has provided a few rumors of its own.

I’m not sure if this warrants a separate post, but the publication writes today that the PS4 will feature Gaikai cloud tech and will offer special social elements in which you can discuss things with friends while playing games.

Asahi, a well-known newspaper in Japan, is reporting that the next PlayStation will cost more than 40,000 yen. The publication also adds to previous speculation that the console will be made available this year in North America and Japan.

40,000 yen may not mean much to consumers overseas. Converting between currencies, that would be about $428 in USD and roughly 317 Euros.

Two things to keep in mind: 1) Asahi says Sony’s new home console will cost more than 40,000 yen and 2) prices tend to see adjustments in different territories rather than straight conversions.

And of course, Asahi’s report should only be treated as speculation for now.

      500$ and 600$… two models.

PS4 will launch in the US at $399.

It will launch a little higher in Japan bc its Sony’s home territory and no one like Xbox in Japan.

No way this is real. Sony isn’t capable of taking massive losses with the PS4 like they did with the PS3. So if this is real, then the PS4 will be a hunk of junk like the WiiU.

Seriously? You’re expecting a next-gen console to launch at less than $399?
Compared to PS3′s $599 launch, this is great.

    hmm

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3_launch

Launch for PS3 49,980 yens and 39,980 yens…. in US, the price was 500 and 600 dollars. So, basically….. it was obivious, the PS4 price will be higher than prcie for Vita, LOGIC WINS. With little math, PS4 will cost cca minimum 500$ (the basic model)

day 1!! This means if xbox is same price it will be $60 more all together! For multiplayer.

It’s definitely not going to be 317€.
Usually marketing with these prices just doesn’t work.
    If it’s 428$ it’ll be 428€, at least!

I mean the PS3 launched with 600€ here. Totally stupid tbh. And I don’t mean the system, I mean the price convertations from Yen to Dollar and from that to €. Whoever makes theses up…

That’s because Europe has extraordinary high taxes and the 399 Euro will be including them unlike the us price that is excluding taxes. up to 20% are the taxes in nearly every country! 320 euro plus 20% for our great states that are corupt and full of debt, thats a premium of 64 Euro, meaning 384 Euro after taxes!

I hope people finally realize, that the firms don’t charge a premium in europe, they just let the customers pay their steep taxes, thats all.

    That’s cheap!!

  • matt

it said in a British newspaper they expect it cost £300

  • Holyfire

PS4 will not be that cheap. Lest not forget u’s will need all new controllers as well which will cost more. And game costs will be up top for dev costs now. And thd threat of removing 2nd hand games. Hmmmm. I got a Wiiu, it will be great

    • matt

they said you able to use the ps3 controllers

      • Holyfire

likely so, but what will the “standard controller” be. If it’s just a good ol’ dual shock then the PS4 will have no beneficial control features. New design/modified controllers won’t mean much, cause devs can’t programme for non-standard peripherals.
If PS4 does offer a new controller for it’s system, like touch screen, or ‘Move’ sensors built on. To play the new PS4 games, the consumer base will be forced to buy into that hardware. That will cost. And cost money that ppl in this climate won’t afford.
With WiiU, well, the major cost in that is in that controller. But when Sony n Msoft suggest their systems won’t cost much more, well that is only really the basic boxes. It’s sounding like the kinect units are being made obsolete by new hardware there to

If you total up a Wii U set up, it easily clocks up to over £400 and that’s a console that doesn’t have hard drive, it doesn’t even have a hard drive bay, plus it’s a current gen console. The PS4 and Xbox 720 will be a lot more powerful than the Wii U, plus they’ll have more bells and whistles. So weighing up the price of the Wii U, the Xbox 720 and PS4 will cost over £400 hands down. I’m not sure how much that works out in the US and Japan, but it’ll be expensive non the less. And back in the old days when games would set you back £60, next gen will bring those days back. Current gen consoles are slowing down, the Wii U and Vita are just not selling. The high price to pay for an Xbox 720 and PS4 will push gaming into a crash and that’s in all regions. And the mad thing is, Nintendo, Microsoftt and Sony don’t even realise it’s started to happen with the Wii U and Vita. And if it’s true about used games being blocked and I can see it happening, I’m afraid it’s going to be a big kick in the nads for gaming.
