Update: The Japanese PS3 software update page makes note of support for a particular NFC reader and improved system stability.

Sony has released a new firmware update for the PlayStation 3. Applying the download will upgrade your system to version 4.40.

Users will be prompted to update their systems upon booting up the PlayStation Store. Head on over to the Settings > System Update area for the download.

At the moment, it’s unclear what sort of changes the update makes. If we receive any details about the new firmware, we’ll update this post.

Would be great if it automatically turned my PS3 into a PS4!

don’t know what other features to add at this point besides more system stability… would be awesome if the ps store updated with HBO Go…..

Wow, another USELESS Sony firmware update. What else is new…Sony’ll never learn.

they patch things here and there to make the system better. how is it useless? jeez just shut up nub.

It is very useful to them, I have no doubt. And it is clear by now they don’t give a shit about making us sit through countless updates

If you have such an issue, then buy PS+ and turn on automatic updates. That way you can specify a time range where the system updates itself automatically so you don’t have to wait when you want to play.

        • DanBurcea

I am aware of that but automatic updates should not be a feature you need to pay for. The fact that you need to pay for that makes Sony looks lame.

What the…are you using the same PSN I’m using? I never needed to pay for updates.

          • DanBurcea

we are talking about automatic updates, as opposed to manual updates, those that keep you from doing anything at your PS3 for like an hour

            Umm..okay.

They aren’t making the PS3 better, they are adding retarded 4MB -25MB updates, that just patch out exploits so people can’t have CFW. If they actually brought a new feature to the table then people would want to download the new Update.PUP rather than having to be forced to get it. PS, I’m prolly going to be thumbed down, cause that’s all people do, but I do like Sony’s PS3, PS2, and TV’s as I own them and a Vita as well, Also have a 3DS, and Wii U, so…. leave it at that.

Maybe they haven’t really added a patching system to the firmware so you don’t have to actually download the whole OS over again.
